We are Tide

The Tide Rises banner from Tide Studio's first public site

Last Thursday, just before lunchtime, we made public something we'd been working on for a few months – we launched Tide.

When Deer Digital almost closed in September, we made it clear to our investor, that we wanted to try to salvage something from the company we loved. Five of us (Becky, Billy, Jo, Kevin, and I) got together with the mindset of evolving the company based on the values and ideas we all shared.

Up, up and away.

A beautiful shadow of the hot air balloon over the fields in the distance.

Today we floated at 3200ft in a wicker basket!

At 11am we called the Virgin Hot Air Balloon line to find out if the flight we'd booked was going ahead. Much to our surprise it was; we were actually going to fly in a Hot Air Balloon!

After a mad dash for the next bus failed, we called for a taxi. An expensive and very long drive later we were in Perth, standing in a large green park, waiting for a car to arrive carrying what can only be described as the biggest picnic basket I've ever seen.

My new blog design for 2013

You may have noticed a new look on my blog. There were a number of aspects of the old design that were starting to feel very dated.

The Man Shed - Workbench

The entire completed workbench.

My man shed got its first important feature this week; my Dad and I built a workbench from an old fire door.

We started by measuring up the door, and stripping off handles, hinges and bolts. After we cut the legs to size, we carefully slid the door into position, and propped it up.

The desk was rock solid, but obviously needed some kind of cover to hide what was quite an ugly door.

My new Mac. The Macbook Pro with Retina Display

A 13" MacBook Pro

So I finally bought a new Mac. My old Macbook Pro was an Early 2008 model and has gotten fairly old (well 5 years old to be precise). It's still a solid laptop, but with a dodgy power conector, useless battery, unreliable optical drive, and an entire line of dead pixels down the screen it was not worth repairing.

I wanted something more portable than my previous system. At 15" and 2.6kg it wasn't the biggest, but it was certainly no Macbook Air. I was torn between the small form factor of an Air or the power of a Retina Macbook Pro.

After tinkering with configuration options on the Apple site, it was clear the 13" Retina was the laptop for me, and I couldn't have been more right! It's a lovely machine, and here's why.
